He systematically developed peripheral nerve surgery, aneurysm surgery, transphenoidal surgery, and surgery for pineal region tumors, among other pioneering interventions. After completing his MBBS from the University of Lucknow in 1957, he also achieved an MS in General Surgery from the University of Lucknow in 1961 and an MS in Neurosurgery from the University of Madras in 1964.
Dr. Banerji started working at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in 1965 and played a key role in creating the Neurosurgery Department from scratch. He is a very accomplished professional, having been granted the title of Emeritus Professor at AIIMS, Delhi, in recognition of his contributions and commitment to the field of Neurosurgery.
After his successful tenure at AIIMS, he established Vidyasagar Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMHANS) in New Delhi, which was one of the first mental health and neurosciences centers to be set up.
