Medical treatment costs in India can vary widely even when two patients have the same diagnosis. The final amount depends on the procedure, hospital, doctor, implant or device, medicines, ICU requirements, room category, length of stay and complexity of the case. For international patients, the more useful question is not simply "how much does treatment in India cost?" but "what exactly is included in the estimate, and what could increase the final bill?" This guide gives indicative 2026 planning ranges, explains what hospital quotations usually include, and shows how to compare estimates properly.

Why treatment prices in India vary
Two patients asking for the same procedure may receive very different estimates. The final cost can change because of:
- Diagnosis and disease severity
- Procedure complexity
- Named surgeon or specialist
- Hospital and city
- ICU requirements
- Implant or medical device
- Medicines
- Room category
- Length of admission
- Additional investigations
- Rehabilitation
- Complications
- Previous surgery or treatment
A preliminary estimate is therefore only useful when you know what treatment the hospital is actually proposing.
Heart treatment cost in India
Cardiac treatment costs depend heavily on whether the patient needs diagnostic testing, catheter-based intervention or open-heart surgery.
| Treatment | Planning range |
|---|---|
| Coronary angiography | $600–$1,200 |
| Angioplasty / PCI | $1,800–$3,500 |
| CABG | $3,500–$7,000+ |
| Valve replacement / repair | $4,500–$9,000+ |
| TAVR / TAVI | $8,000–$14,000 |
| Pacemaker | $2,500–$4,500 |
| Electrophysiology / ablation | Case-specific |
| Heart transplant | Case-specific |
The cost of CABG may increase because of the number of diseased vessels, previous cardiac surgery, ventricular function, additional valve surgery, ICU requirements or a longer recovery. For angioplasty, the number and type of stents can make a major difference.
Cancer treatment cost in India
There is no meaningful single price for "cancer treatment". Treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, hormone therapy, bone marrow transplantation, CAR-T, or a combination of several treatments.
| Treatment | Planning approach |
|---|---|
| Cancer surgery | Case-specific |
| Chemotherapy | Usually priced by drug protocol and number of cycles |
| Radiation therapy | $3,500–$8,000+ |
| Proton therapy | Case-specific |
| Immunotherapy | Highly drug-dependent |
| Targeted therapy | Highly drug-dependent |
| BMT / stem-cell transplant | $15,000–$30,000+ |
| CAR-T | Case-specific and substantially more expensive |
Chemotherapy prices vary dramatically because different cancers use different drugs, doses and treatment schedules. For more on treatment options, see our cancer treatment in India guide.
Liver transplant cost in India
A living-donor liver transplant is one of the more expensive planned treatments for international patients because it involves both the recipient and the donor. A reasonable international planning range is $25,000–$40,000+, which may include recipient evaluation, donor evaluation, transplant surgery, anaesthesia, ICU, hospital stay and early postoperative monitoring.
The cost may increase if the recipient needs prolonged ICU care, additional donor testing is required, dialysis is needed, complications occur, or the hospital stay is longer than expected.
Kidney transplant cost in India
A broad planning range for international private patients is approximately $13,000–$18,000+, which may include recipient evaluation, donor evaluation, transplant surgery, anaesthesia, standard hospital stay and early postoperative care.
Additional costs may include dialysis, immunological testing, longer hospitalisation, treatment of infection or rejection, and long-term immunosuppressive medicines.
Bone marrow transplant cost in India
Bone marrow or stem-cell transplantation varies substantially according to the transplant type. A broad planning range is $15,000–$30,000+. The final price depends on whether the transplant is autologous or allogeneic, the donor source and testing required, the conditioning regimen, medicines, the isolation period, complications and length of admission.
Knee replacement cost in India
A broad planning range for total knee replacement is approximately $4,000–$7,500+ per knee. The price may vary because of unilateral vs bilateral replacement, implant brand and design, robotic assistance, surgeon, room category, length of stay and rehabilitation. See our knee replacement hospital comparison for programme-specific detail.
Hip replacement cost in India
For total hip replacement, international patients may see planning estimates around $5,000–$8,000+. Cost depends on the implant, bearing surface, surgeon, surgical approach, hospital, rehabilitation, and whether surgery is unilateral or bilateral. As with knee replacement, implant choice can significantly affect the final bill.
Neurosurgery cost in India
Neurosurgery varies too much to have one universal price. Examples include brain tumour surgery, spine surgery, vascular neurosurgery, epilepsy surgery and skull-base surgery. A broad planning range for major neurosurgical procedures is $5,000–$12,000+; complex cases can cost more. Important cost factors include ICU, navigation, intraoperative imaging, implants, neurological monitoring, pathology and length of admission.
IVF cost in India
A basic IVF cycle may cost approximately $1,600–$2,400. Additional costs may apply for stimulation medicines, ICSI, embryo freezing, embryo storage, genetic testing, donor eggs or sperm, and additional laboratory procedures. See our IVF in India guide for a full breakdown.
Health check-up cost in India
Preventive health check-ups usually cost much less than major medical treatment. Packages may include blood tests, ECG, ultrasound, chest imaging, specialist consultation, cardiac screening, cancer screening, and women's or men's health tests. Basic packages may cost only a few hundred dollars or less, while executive packages with advanced imaging can cost more. The exact included tests matter more than the package name.
What is included in treatment cost in India?
A hospital estimate may include some or all of the following:
- Surgeon or specialist fee
- Anaesthesia
- Operating theatre
- Procedure
- Hospital room
- ICU
- Standard nursing care
- Routine medicines
- Investigations
- Implant or medical device
- Blood products
- Physiotherapy
- Early follow-up
But inclusions differ between hospitals.
What may not be included in the hospital quote?
Additional charges may include extra ICU days, additional investigations, treatment of complications, additional surgery, premium implants, expensive medicines, blood products, dialysis, rehabilitation after discharge, extra hospital days, and accommodation outside the hospital. This is why the lowest initial estimate is not necessarily the lowest final cost.
Medical cost vs travel cost
Keep these two budgets separate.
Medical budget
May include consultations, tests, hospital treatment, medicines, ICU, inpatient stay and rehabilitation.
Travel budget
May include Medical Visa fees, flights, accommodation, local transport, meals, companion expenses and extended stay after discharge.
How much should you budget for accommodation?
Accommodation costs depend heavily on the city, hospital location, length of stay, hotel vs serviced apartment, and whether a companion is travelling. For longer treatment such as transplant, BMT, cancer therapy or major surgery, accommodation after discharge can become a meaningful part of the total budget.
When comparing hospitals, ask how long the patient is expected to remain admitted, how long the patient should stay near the hospital after discharge, and whether a companion needs to stay for the entire period.
How to compare hospital quotations correctly
The key rule is to compare like with like.
- Confirm the diagnosis — make sure the hospitals are reviewing the same medical records.
- Compare the treatment plan — one hospital may propose a different procedure.
- Compare the named doctor — ask who will actually treat the patient.
- Compare what is included — procedure, implant, medicines, ICU, room, investigations, rehabilitation.
- Ask what could increase the price — complications, extra ICU, longer hospital stay, extra medicines, additional procedures.
- Separate travel costs — do not mix treatment cost with hotel and flight expenses.
Example: why two hospital estimates may look very different
Imagine Hospital A quotes $6,000 and Hospital B quotes $7,500. Hospital A may exclude the implant, ICU, physiotherapy and postoperative imaging, while Hospital B may include all four. The apparently more expensive hospital may therefore have the more complete estimate.
Should you choose the cheapest hospital?
Not automatically. Cost is important, particularly for self-paying international patients, but the decision should also consider the named specialist, experience with the procedure, hospital infrastructure, ICU support, treatment plan, rehabilitation and follow-up. For a detailed comparison framework, see our guide to choosing a hospital in India.
When should you request a treatment estimate?
A meaningful estimate usually requires medical records. Useful information includes:
- Diagnosis
- Age
- Medical reports
- Imaging
- Pathology where relevant
- Previous treatment
- Current medicines
- Current symptoms
The hospital may still need additional tests after arrival before confirming the final treatment plan.
Preliminary estimate vs final hospital bill
These are not the same thing. A preliminary estimate is usually based on medical records received before travel, expected treatment, standard hospital stay and expected uncomplicated recovery. The final bill reflects what actually happened: tests performed, procedures performed, medicines used, ICU days, hospital stay, implants, complications and additional treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Is medical treatment in India cheap?
Private treatment in India can cost less than comparable private treatment in some countries, but the actual price depends on the procedure, hospital and individual case. A case-specific quotation is more useful than a general claim that India is a certain percentage cheaper.
How much does heart surgery cost in India?
CABG may broadly cost around $3,500–$7,000+ for international private patients. Valve surgery and other procedures can cost more depending on the implant and complexity.
How much does liver transplant cost in India?
A living-donor liver transplant may broadly cost around $25,000–$40,000+. Ask whether both donor and recipient evaluation and hospitalisation are included.
How much does kidney transplant cost in India?
A broad planning range is approximately $13,000–$18,000+. Dialysis, additional testing or prolonged admission can increase the total.
How much does knee replacement cost in India?
A total knee replacement may broadly cost around $4,000–$7,500+, depending on hospital, implant, surgeon and whether robotic assistance is used.
How much does cancer treatment cost in India?
There is no single useful cancer-treatment price. Costs depend on the cancer type and whether treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, targeted treatment or transplantation.
Are medicines included in hospital packages?
Sometimes. Ask whether routine medicines and expensive drugs are both included. Cancer, transplant and intensive-care medicines can significantly affect the final cost.
Are implants included?
They may be, but this must be confirmed. For orthopaedic and cardiac treatment, ask for the exact implant, valve, stent or device included in the quotation.
Does the quoted price include the patient's companion?
Usually not, unless specifically stated. Companion accommodation, meals, flights, visa and local transport should generally be budgeted separately.
Can I get a treatment estimate before travelling?
Often, yes. Hospitals can usually provide an initial opinion and estimate after reviewing medical records. The final treatment plan and bill may change after examination or additional testing in India.
