Dr. Anil Bhan

Dr. Anil Bhan is Chairman - Cardiac Care at Medanta, Gurugram and a senior cardiovascular surgeon. He graduated from Medical College Srinagar as a gold medallist and completed advanced surgical training in general and cardiothoracic surgery. Medanta credits him with more than 15,000 cardiac and vascular procedures and with helping establish major cardiac surgical programmes in India.

His current areas of expertise include aortic aneurysm surgery, heart-valve repair, paediatric cardiac surgery and peripheral vascular surgery. These fields often involve complex anatomy and may require coordination between cardiac surgery, cardiology, vascular surgery, imaging and critical care before a treatment plan is finalised.

Medanta notes that Dr. Bhan has designed and developed more than 50 surgical instruments for cardiac surgery. He was also a member of the team involved in India’s first successful heart transplant in 1994. Other milestones listed by the hospital include the first ECMO use in India and a highly unusual paediatric coronary bypass with aneurysm repair.

His present practice is relevant for patients with aortic disease, severe valve pathology, congenital cardiac conditions or complex vascular problems requiring surgery. Review commonly includes echocardiography, CT or MR angiography, coronary imaging, previous operative reports and assessment of kidney, lung and ventricular function. The final surgical strategy depends on anatomy, previous procedures, age, comorbidities and expected risk. Complex cases may also require multidisciplinary review with interventional cardiology, imaging, intensive care and transplant teams before surgery.
