Dr. Prof. Mohamed Rela

Prof. Mohamed Rela is Chairman and Managing Director of Dr. Rela Institute & Medical Centre, Chennai, and a surgeon specialising in HPB surgery and liver transplantation. He completed MBBS and MS at the University of Madras, followed by FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and later received a DSc (Honoris causa) from The Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University.

His clinical work centres on liver transplantation, paediatric transplantation and complex hepatobiliary surgery. His career has included living-donor, split-liver and technically demanding transplant procedures, as well as surgery for complex liver and biliary disease. He also works in robotic liver surgery and advanced HPB procedures.

Prof. Rela has performed more than 6,000 liver transplants and has played a major role in developing liver-transplant programmes in India. A transplant performed by his team on a five-day-old girl received Guinness World Record recognition. His academic work spans liver transplantation and complex hepatobiliary surgery, with extensive scientific publications and international teaching and leadership roles.

His professional affiliations include the International Liver Transplantation Society, The Transplantation Society, British Transplantation Society, European Society of Organ Transplantation, International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and American Society of Transplantation.

His current positions also include leadership roles in transplant organisations and academic publishing. Patients with advanced liver disease, complex HPB conditions or a need for adult or paediatric transplantation require individual assessment of diagnosis, liver function, anatomy, donor options and overall transplant suitability before a treatment plan is selected.
