Laminectomy: общие сведения
Laminectomy in India is a spinal decompression operation that removes part or all of the vertebral lamina to create more space for the spinal cord or nerve roots. It may be used for selected cervical, thoracic or lumbar stenosis, nerve compression and some tumours when symptoms, neurological findings and imaging support surgical decompression.
Planning usually includes a neurological examination and MRI of the affected spinal region, with standing X-rays or CT added when instability, deformity, previous surgery or detailed bone anatomy needs assessment. Depending on the diagnosis, decompression may be performed alone or combined with fusion when instability is already present or is expected after surgery. Laminectomy is not automatically appropriate for nonspecific back pain without a matching compressive cause.
Risks include bleeding, infection, dural tear, nerve injury, persistent symptoms and postoperative instability. New bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness or rapidly progressive limb weakness requires urgent local assessment rather than waiting for planned international travel. The cost of laminectomy in India depends on the spinal region, number of levels, whether fusion and implants are added, neuromonitoring, anaesthesia, hospital stay and rehabilitation.
India has tertiary hospitals with orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine teams, advanced imaging, neuromonitoring and rehabilitation support. Medical Help India can connect patients with an appropriate healthcare partner in India to review MRI and other records, explain whether decompression alone, fusion or another approach is suitable and provide an individual estimate.

How much does Laminectomy cost in India?
Cost depends on the cervical, thoracic or lumbar region, number of levels, whether fusion and implants are added, neuromonitoring, anaesthesia, hospital stay and rehabilitation. Multilevel decompression or surgery combined with fusion has a different cost profile from a limited decompression alone.
Which medical reports are useful to have ready for Laminectomy?
Have ready: recent MRI images and report for the affected spinal region, standing X-rays and CT when available, plus spine or neurosurgical notes. Include neurological symptoms, previous physiotherapy, injections or surgery, current medicines and any new bladder or bowel dysfunction, saddle numbness or rapidly progressive weakness.
What does a laminectomy do?
It removes part or all of the vertebral lamina to create more room for the spinal cord or nerve roots when compression is causing symptoms.
Is fusion always required with laminectomy?
No. Fusion is added only when instability, deformity or the amount of bone removal makes stabilisation clinically necessary.
What imaging is usually needed before laminectomy?
MRI is commonly used to show nerve or spinal-cord compression, with CT or X-rays added when bone anatomy or stability needs further assessment.
