Mastoidectomy in India is ear surgery that removes diseased mastoid air cells behind the ear, most commonly for cholesteatoma, chronic infection or complications that cannot be controlled with simpler treatment. The extent of surgery depends on middle-ear disease, hearing status, previous operations and temporal-bone anatomy.
Assessment is led by an otologist or ENT surgeon and commonly includes microscopic ear examination, audiometry and high-resolution CT of the temporal bone when indicated. MRI with diffusion-weighted imaging may be useful in selected cholesteatoma cases or postoperative follow-up. Surgery may be combined with tympanoplasty or ossicular reconstruction, and the surgeon may use canal-wall-up or canal-wall-down techniques according to disease extent, anatomy and follow-up reliability.
Important risks include hearing loss, dizziness, taste disturbance, facial-nerve injury, cerebrospinal-fluid leak, persistent drainage and residual or recurrent cholesteatoma. Long-term ear follow-up is particularly important after cholesteatoma surgery. Severe headache, facial weakness, high fever, neurological symptoms or swelling behind the ear with systemic illness requires urgent local assessment because complicated ear infection can spread beyond the mastoid.
