Myringotomy and grommet insertion in India is an ENT procedure in which a small opening is made in the eardrum and a ventilation tube is placed to improve middle-ear aeration. It is commonly used for selected children with persistent otitis media with effusion and hearing difficulty, and for some patients with recurrent middle-ear disease or Eustachian tube dysfunction.
Assessment usually includes ENT examination, otoscopy, tympanometry and age-appropriate hearing testing. The decision to insert grommets depends on how long middle-ear fluid has persisted, its effect on hearing, speech or development, recurrent infections and other risk factors rather than fluid being present on a single examination. Adenoid assessment may be relevant in selected children with recurrent or persistent disease.
Grommets usually extrude spontaneously over time. Risks include ear discharge, blockage or early extrusion of the tube, tympanosclerosis and a small risk of persistent eardrum perforation.
