Norwood Procedure: общие сведения

The Norwood procedure in India is first-stage palliative heart surgery for newborns with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and selected related single-ventricle conditions in which the left side of the heart cannot support systemic circulation. It is not a complete repair: it creates a workable circulation so the baby can proceed, when appropriate, toward later staged operations.

Planning is performed by a congenital cardiac team using detailed echocardiography, with CT, catheterisation or other studies added when anatomy is unclear. The operation typically reconstructs systemic outflow, establishes a connection between the pulmonary artery and aorta, and creates controlled pulmonary blood flow using a shunt or right-ventricle-to-pulmonary-artery conduit. Coronary anatomy, associated defects, birth weight, organ function and the baby's preoperative stability all affect risk.

The Norwood operation is high-risk neonatal cardiac surgery requiring paediatric cardiac anaesthesia and dedicated cardiac intensive care. Important complications include low cardiac output, shunt or conduit obstruction, bleeding, arrhythmia, infection, neurological injury and organ dysfunction. Babies with suspected duct-dependent HLHS require immediate specialist neonatal cardiac care; planned international travel must never delay stabilisation or prostaglandin treatment when indicated.

Cost in India depends on preoperative cardiac imaging, surgical complexity, conduit or shunt materials, duration of ventilation, cardiac ICU stay, medicines, complications and length of hospitalisation. Leading paediatric heart centres in India provide congenital cardiac surgeons, paediatric cardiologists, neonatal cardiac intensive care, perfusion and interventional cardiology within one programme. Medical Help India can connect families with an appropriate healthcare partner to review the baby's imaging and records, confirm programme capability and obtain an individual estimate when transfer is medically appropriate.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

How much does Norwood Procedure cost in India?

Cost depends on preoperative cardiac imaging, surgical complexity, shunt or right-ventricle-to-pulmonary-artery conduit materials, ventilation, neonatal cardiac ICU duration, medicines, complications and total hospital stay. The estimate should distinguish the Norwood admission from later Glenn and Fontan stages.

Which medical reports are useful to have ready for Norwood Procedure?

Have ready: the newborn's echocardiogram images and report, paediatric cardiology and neonatal summaries, birth and current weight, oxygen saturations, current medicines and details of prostaglandin or respiratory support. Include CT or catheterisation results if already performed. Any transfer of an unstable baby must be coordinated directly between treating cardiac teams.

What condition is the Norwood procedure used for?

It is mainly used as first-stage palliation for hypoplastic left heart syndrome and selected related single-ventricle conditions in which the left heart cannot support systemic circulation.

Is the Norwood procedure a complete repair?

No. It is the first stage of a planned single-ventricle pathway. Babies who remain suitable usually proceed to later Glenn and Fontan stages after specialist reassessment.

Why does the Norwood procedure require a specialised centre?

It is high-risk neonatal cardiac surgery requiring congenital cardiac surgeons, paediatric cardiac anaesthesia, perfusion and dedicated cardiac intensive care. Preoperative instability and postoperative circulation can change quickly.
