Phrenic Nerve Stimulation: общие сведения
Phrenic nerve stimulation in India uses an implanted pacing system to activate the diaphragm in selected patients who cannot breathe adequately because central respiratory drive is impaired while the phrenic nerves and diaphragm remain functional. It may be considered in some patients with high cervical spinal-cord injury, congenital or acquired central hypoventilation or other carefully selected causes of ventilator dependence.
Assessment includes pulmonology, neurology and surgical review, respiratory-function testing and evaluation of phrenic nerve and diaphragm function. Depending on the condition, ultrasound, fluoroscopy, nerve-conduction or electrophysiological testing may help confirm that the nerve-muscle pathway can respond to stimulation. The team also reviews ventilator requirements, airway status and reversible causes of respiratory failure.
Implantation can involve electrodes placed on or near the phrenic nerves with a pulse generator or external controller, depending on the system. The device is programmed gradually as the diaphragm is conditioned. Risks include infection, lead or device failure, inadequate diaphragmatic response and nerve injury, and backup ventilatory support may still be required depending on the condition.
Cost in India depends on the pacing system, implantation technique, respiratory and electrophysiological testing, hospital stay and follow-up programming. Specialist tertiary centres provide respiratory, neurological, surgical and neuromodulation teams. Medical Help India can connect international patients with a suitable healthcare partner to review respiratory records, assess candidacy and obtain an individual estimate.

How much does Phrenic Nerve Stimulation cost in India?
Cost depends on the pacing system, implantation technique, respiratory and neurological testing, hospital stay, device programming and later revisions or replacements. Ongoing ventilator or respiratory-support costs should be considered separately.
Which medical reports are useful to have ready for Phrenic Nerve Stimulation?
Have ready: pulmonology and neurology notes, respiratory-function testing, phrenic nerve or diaphragm assessments, ventilator settings and previous cervical spinal-cord or neurological records. Include airway procedures, infection history and current respiratory-support requirements.
Who may be considered for phrenic nerve stimulation?
Selected patients with impaired central respiratory drive and ventilator dependence may be considered when the phrenic nerves and diaphragm remain capable of responding to stimulation.
What testing is needed before diaphragm pacing?
Respiratory and neurological assessment plus evaluation of phrenic nerve and diaphragm function are needed to confirm that the nerve-muscle pathway can respond appropriately.
Does phrenic nerve stimulation replace a ventilator immediately?
Not necessarily. Diaphragm conditioning and gradual programming are often required, and some patients continue to need ventilator support for part or all of the day.
