Pituitary Tumor Surgery: общие сведения
Pituitary tumour surgery in India is most often performed through an endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach for selected pituitary adenomas and other sellar lesions. Surgery may be recommended for tumours causing visual compression, progressive growth, hormone-related complications that are not adequately controlled medically, or other clinically significant mass effects. Some functioning pituitary tumours, particularly prolactinomas, are usually treated medically first, so specialist endocrine assessment is essential before surgery.
Evaluation typically includes contrast-enhanced pituitary MRI, a complete pituitary hormone profile and visual-field testing when the optic pathways are at risk. Endocrinologists and pituitary neurosurgeons review tumour size and extension, cavernous-sinus involvement, hormone excess or deficiency and previous medical or surgical treatment. Selected complex lesions may require additional CT imaging or vascular assessment.
During endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery, the tumour is approached through the nasal passages and sphenoid sinus. Important risks include cerebrospinal-fluid leak, bleeding, infection, visual injury, diabetes insipidus and new pituitary hormone deficiencies. Postoperative monitoring includes fluid balance, sodium and pituitary function. Sudden severe headache with visual loss, reduced consciousness or acute neurological deterioration can indicate pituitary apoplexy and requires urgent local emergency assessment rather than planned travel.
Cost in India depends on tumour complexity, endoscopic skull-base equipment, MRI and hormonal investigations, neurosurgical and ENT involvement, pathology, ICU needs and hospital stay. Major tertiary neuroscience centres in India provide pituitary neurosurgery, endocrinology, neuro-ophthalmology, advanced imaging and skull-base support. Medical Help India can connect international patients with a suitable healthcare partner to review MRI and hormone results, compare treatment options and obtain an individual hospital estimate.
