PRK (photorefractive keratectomy) in India is a flap-free laser vision-correction procedure that reshapes the cornea to treat selected myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. It may be considered when the refractive error is stable and corneal shape and thickness are suitable, including some patients in whom flap-based LASIK is less desirable.

Preoperative assessment includes refraction, corneal topography or tomography, pachymetry, tear-film evaluation and a detailed eye examination. Contact lenses may need to be stopped before measurements. The surgeon screens for keratoconus or other corneal ectasia risk, significant dry eye, retinal problems and other conditions that could make refractive surgery unsuitable.

During PRK, the corneal epithelium is removed and an excimer laser reshapes the underlying cornea; a bandage contact lens is usually placed while the surface heals. Vision recovers more gradually than after LASIK. Risks include pain during early healing, haze, dry eye, under- or over-correction, infection and rare corneal complications. Severe pain with increasing redness or rapidly worsening vision after surgery requires urgent ophthalmic review.

Cost in India depends on one or both eyes, laser platform, wavefront or topography-guided planning when used, preoperative diagnostics, surgeon fees, medicines and follow-up.
