Submucosal Tunneling Endoscopic Resection (STER): общие сведения
Submucosal tunneling endoscopic resection (STER) in India is an advanced minimally invasive endoscopic technique used to remove selected subepithelial tumours arising from deeper layers of the gastrointestinal wall, particularly in the oesophagus and gastric cardia. A therapeutic endoscopist creates a tunnel within the submucosal layer to reach and remove the lesion while preserving much of the overlying mucosa.
Planning usually includes upper endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to define the lesion’s size, layer of origin and relationship to surrounding structures. CT or other cross-sectional imaging may be required for larger lesions or when malignant behaviour is suspected. STER is not suitable for every subepithelial lesion; tumour size, location, growth pattern and the ability to achieve safe endoscopic removal all influence selection.
Potential complications include bleeding, perforation, infection and gas leakage into surrounding tissues, and the resected lesion should undergo histopathological examination to determine the final diagnosis and whether additional treatment is needed. Cost in India varies with lesion complexity, EUS and imaging, anaesthesia, endoscopic devices, pathology and the need for observation or hospital admission.
