Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in India is an endoscopic operation used to relieve urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic enlargement (BPH). It is usually considered when symptoms such as weak urine flow, incomplete emptying, recurrent urinary retention or repeated urinary complications remain troublesome despite appropriate medical treatment. TURP is not a treatment for prostate cancer.

Before surgery, patients usually undergo a urology assessment with symptom review, urine testing, kidney-function tests and evaluation of prostate size and bladder emptying. PSA testing, digital rectal examination, uroflowmetry, ultrasound and cystoscopy may be used when clinically appropriate.
